The drive from Amritsar to Mussoorie

Mussoorie is 450 km from Amritsar, but it is the last 35 km from Dehradun that changes the character of the drive: a climbing hill road with switchbacks and a view that opens up all the way to the Doon valley. Nine hours is a realistic door-to-door time. We prefer an early start so the climb from Dehradun happens in daylight, and Ambala or Roorkee are the usual breaks on the highway section. The town sits along a ridge with the Mall on top; Kempty falls is 15 km out, Gun Hill gives you the panorama, and Lal Tibba is the highest point for a clear day. March to June is the season, with September to November a quieter second window. Because of the hills, we usually suggest two days with a halt at Dehradun rather than one long day.
