Amritsar Taxi

Quick answer

A Punjab gurdwara tour by taxi takes you through the historic shrines around Amritsar in one or two days: Harmandir Sahib in the city, then Tarn Taran Sahib, Goindwal Sahib, Khadur Sahib and Baba Bakala, with Dera Baba Nanak and Sultanpur Lodhi on a longer loop. Which gurdwaras can we cover in a day from Amritsar?

Harmandir Sahib in the morning, then Tarn Taran Sahib 25 km away, followed by Goindwal Sahib on the Beas with its historic baoli, Khadur Sahib and Baba Bakala. All are within an hour or so of each other.

That is a full but comfortable day in a car, and it is the route most pilgrims take when they have one day beyond the Golden Temple.

What does a two-day gurdwara tour add?

Dera Baba Nanak, on the border side of Gurdaspur district, and Sultanpur Lodhi, where Guru Nanak Dev Ji lived after his marriage. Both are real destinations in their own right and neither fits comfortably into the same day as the Tarn Taran circuit.

A two-day plan can also add the Partition Museum and Gobindgarh Fort in Amritsar itself, with an evening at Wagah Border.

How do I plan the timings for darshan?

Gurdwaras are open long hours and early mornings are calm, so we usually start at 7 or 8 am and reach the farthest shrine before the middle of the day. Langar is served at most of them, so you will not go hungry.

Tell us the shrines that matter most to you and we will order the route so the ones you care about get generous time rather than a rushed stop.

Is a private car better than joining a group tour?

For elderly pilgrims and families, yes. You sit for the whole journey, the car waits at each shrine, and the pace is yours — no fixed departure from a coach park and no walk back to a bus.

A Tempo Traveller is available for groups of up to twelve, so a whole family or a group of friends can travel together in one vehicle with the luggage.

What should we carry for a gurdwara tour?

A head covering for everyone — a scarf or rumal — and socks, since shoes come off at every shrine. Most gurdwaras have clean washrooms and drinking water.

Carry photo identification if your route includes the border areas near Dera Baba Nanak, where there are check posts.

Questions we get about this

How long does it take to visit Tarn Taran and Goindwal from Amritsar?

Six to eight hours for the round trip including darshan time and a langar stop, depending on how long you spend at each shrine. It fits comfortably into one day.

Can we start very early in the morning for darshan?

Yes. We frequently start at 5 or 6 am so the farthest shrine is reached before the crowds. Tell us the time you want and the driver will be at your hotel.

Do you also cover Anandpur Sahib and Fatehgarh Sahib?

Those are in the other direction, closer to Chandigarh, so they are usually done as part of a two or three day circuit. Tell us your dates and we will quote the full route.

Is a wheelchair-friendly car available for elderly pilgrims?

An Innova or an Ertiga is easiest to get in and out of, and the driver helps with wheelchairs where the shrine allows. Tell us when you book so we assign the right car and driver.

How much does a gurdwara tour by taxi cost?

It is quoted on WhatsApp for the route and the car. The Tarn Taran and Goindwal circuit is usually a day rate; a two-day route including Dera Baba Nanak and Sultanpur Lodhi is quoted per day.
