Short answer

From Amritsar, two Himachal trips are easy morning drives: Dharamshala and McLeodganj, about 200 km and four and a half to five hours, and Dalhousie with Khajjiar, 198 km and about four and a half hours. Shimla at 340 km and Manali at 388 km are full days in the car, best done with an early start or a night halt.

What the road is actually like

Every one of these trips starts the same way: the Pathankot highway out of Amritsar, four lanes and fast, where the kilometres go by quickly. Ranjit Sagar dam near Pathankot is the natural breakfast stop, and it is the last stretch of easy driving before the hills.

After Pathankot the character changes. Dharamshala is reached through the Kangra valley, past the Kangra Fort and the Masroor rock-cut temples if you have the time. Dalhousie climbs from Banikhet through deodar forest to a town spread over five hills. Shimla means Chandigarh first and then the long climb from Parwanoo through Solan. Manali follows the Beas from Mandi, with the Aut tunnel cutting a useful half hour off the old route.

The four-day Himachal circuit

If you have four days, the round trip that avoids repeating a road is Dalhousie and Dharamshala together. Day one up to Dalhousie; day two for Khajjiar, Panchpula and Subhash Baoli; day three across to Dharamshala through Pathankot, leaving the afternoon for McLeodganj and Bhagsunag falls; day four for the Kangra valley on the descent and the drive home.

That route covers the two best hill towns within reach of Amritsar without ever retracing the highway, and it keeps each driving day under five hours.

When to go

March to June is the season everyone knows: the plains are hot, the hills are mild, and the rhododendrons are out in the Kangra valley. September and October are the best-kept secret — the monsoon has washed the air clean and the Dhauladhar range stands out sharply.

December to February is for snow. Dalhousie and the upper Kangra and Kullu valleys get it, and the passes beyond Manali close, but the towns themselves are magical in a way the summer cannot match. Carry chains and expect slower driving.

Driving yourself or going with a driver?

For the two-hour highway stretches, self-driving is perfectly reasonable if you know Indian roads. For the hill sections, it is worth thinking about: hairpin bends, local bus traffic, one-way stretches and parking in towns that were never built for cars.

A car with a local driver also solves the practical side — the driver parks and waits while you walk the Mall or take the Bhagsu trail, and you do not spend the holiday looking for a parking space. Our hill drivers run these routes through the year and know where the road narrows after rain.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Himachal Pradesh from Amritsar?

Dharamshala and Dalhousie are both about 200 km from Amritsar, four and a half to five hours by car. Shimla is 340 km and Manali 388 km, so those two are full days of driving rather than morning runs.

What is the best time for a Himachal road trip from Amritsar?

March to June is green and mild, and September to November gives the clearest mountain views with fewer visitors. December to February brings snow to Dalhousie and the upper Kangra and Kullu valleys, and the roads need more care.

Can I do Dharamshala and Dalhousie in one trip?

Yes, and it makes a good four-day circuit. Dalhousie first, then across to Dharamshala through Pathankot in about four hours, with McLeodganj and Bhagsu on the Kangra side before you return to Amritsar.

Is the road from Amritsar to Dharamshala safe for a night drive?

The highway to Pathankot is comfortable at night, but the hill section after that is better driven in daylight. We plan departures so the climb into Kangra, Dalhousie or Kullu happens while the light is good.

Do I need a 4x4 for Himachal from Amritsar?

No. The main roads to Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Shimla and Manali are metalled highways, and a sedan or an Innova handles them comfortably. An Innova or Crysta is more comfortable on the longer climbs, especially with a full car.
