An Amritsar itinerary for one, two and three days
How to spend one, two or three days in Amritsar by private cab: what fits in each day, the right order to see it in, and where the Wagah Border ceremony belongs.
Short answer: how many days do you need?
One day is enough to see Amritsar's essentials if you start early: the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and the Wagah Border ceremony. Two days adds Gobindgarh Fort and the gurdwaras at Tarn Taran and Goindwal. Three days lets you leave the city for Dharamshala or Dalhousie.
One day in Amritsar
Start at the Golden Temple between 6 am and 8 am. The temple is open around the clock, and the early hours are the calmest you will see it — the parikrama around the sarovar is quiet, and the langar hall is in full swing. Give it two hours without hurrying.
From the temple it is a short walk to Jallianwala Bagh, the memorial garden, and then to the Partition Museum in the Heritage Street area, which takes about ninety minutes if you read the exhibits. Lunch in the old city follows naturally, and Amritsari kulcha is the local thing to eat.
Keep the early afternoon for Durgiana Temple, a ten minute drive away, and add Gobindgarh Fort if the timings suit. Then leave for the Wagah Border by 2:30 pm in winter or 3:30 pm in summer for the Beating Retreat ceremony, and be back in the city for dinner.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| One day | Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Partition Museum | Lunch, Durgiana Temple, Gobindgarh Fort | Wagah Border ceremony |
Two days in Amritsar
Day one is the plan above. Day two heads out of the city to the gurdwaras: Tarn Taran Sahib about 25 km away, then Goindwal Sahib on the Beas with its historic baoli, and Khadur Sahib and Baba Bakala on the way back. Sadda Pind, the Punjabi village resort, is a good closing stop.
With two days you can also slow down the city itself. Gobindgarh Fort has a sound and light show in the evening on some days, and the Golden Temple at night, lit and reflected in the water, is a different experience from the morning. Many people go back a second time for exactly that.
Three days in Amritsar and the hills
On day three, leave the city. Dharamshala and McLeodganj are about 200 km away, four and a half to five hours on the Pathankot road, and the Kangra valley rewards an overnight stay. Dalhousie is roughly the same distance, with the Khajjiar meadow 27 km further on.
A three-day plan of one day in Amritsar and two in the hills works well in a car with a driver: one vehicle, one driver, and the hill section driven in daylight.
Practical notes for any itinerary
Book the Wagah Border trip for your first available evening, because the ceremony is weather-dependent — heavy rain cancels it — and having a second evening in hand means you can try again.
Museums and forts charge their own entry, and the Golden Temple is free at all hours. A car and driver on the 8 hour, 80 km slab covers a full city day comfortably, and it is the reason the order above does not depend on buses or timings that are not yours.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough for Amritsar?
One well-planned day covers the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and the Wagah Border ceremony. It is tight but it works, provided you start in the morning and leave for the border by early afternoon.
What is the best order to see Amritsar's sights?
Start at the Golden Temple early, when it is calm, then walk to Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum, which are minutes away. Keep the afternoon for Durgiana Temple and Gobindgarh Fort, and the evening for the Wagah Border ceremony.
Do I need two days for the gurdwaras near Amritsar?
Yes, if you want Tarn Taran Sahib, Goindwal Sahib, Khadur Sahib and Baba Bakala without rushing. They sit within an hour of each other, but the drive plus darshan time is a full day of its own.
What time should I start the day in Amritsar?
Start at the Golden Temple between 6 am and 8 am if you can. The temple is open 24 hours and the early morning is far quieter than the evening, which leaves the rest of the day free for everything else.
Can Amritsar be combined with Dharamshala or Dalhousie?
Yes. Both are about 200 km from Amritsar — four and a half to five hours by car — so a three-day trip of one day in Amritsar and two in the hills works well.
