Wagah Border ceremony timings: when to leave Amritsar
The Wagah Border Beating Retreat ceremony runs every evening at sunset — around 4:15 pm in winter and 5:15 pm in summer. Here is exactly when to leave Amritsar.
Wagah Border ceremony timings at a glance

Leave Amritsar about two hours before that — by 2:30 pm in winter and 3:30 pm in summer — because the stands fill early and the walk from the parking area takes time.

Why the timing moves through the year
The ceremony is tied to sunset, not to a clock, so the start time drifts as the days get longer and shorter. December evenings in Punjab start darkening by 5 pm, while June stays light past 7 pm, which is why the same event is advertised as 4:15 pm in one season and 5:15 pm in another.
Because it moves week by week, the honest answer is that you should confirm the timing for your date rather than for the season. Message us on WhatsApp with your date and we will tell you the correct departure time, and the same information is being given out by the BSF at the border every day.
How early should you actually reach the border?
Earlier than you think. The stands have a limited number of seats with a clear view, and the crowd walks in over the hour before the ceremony starts. Arriving an hour early is comfortable; arriving at the ceremony time means standing at the back of the crowd.
The walk from the parking area to the seating is a few hundred metres on flat ground, but it is exposed and there is a queue at the security gate. On the days around Republic Day and Independence Day the crowd is far larger, so allow extra time, and expect a longer wait on the way out as well.
What happens at the ceremony
Officers of the Border Security Force on the Indian side and the Pakistan Rangers on the other conduct a drill of marching, saluting and lowering both flags at the same gate. The crowd on both sides cheers through it, and the energy is the reason people travel from across the country to stand there for forty-five minutes.
Foreign visitors get a separate seating enclosure and are usually directed to it by the marshals. There is no charge for any of this: it is a daily military ceremony, not a ticketed show.
What to carry, and what to leave in the car
Carry photo identification for every person travelling, including children if they have it. Phones and cameras are allowed; large bags, tripods and drones are not, and there is no locker service, which is why we suggest leaving everything you do not need in the car with the driver.
Water, a cap and sunglasses matter in the summer months, when the stands are in the open with no shade. In December and January, take a jacket — the border sits in open fields and the evening wind is cold.
Getting to the border and back
The drive is 32 km each way on the Attari road, which leaves Amritsar past the Gobindgarh Fort side of the city. With a taxi, the driver parks, waits through the whole ceremony and brings you back to your hotel the same evening — no hunting for transport in the crowd afterwards.
If you have the time, Sadda Pind, the Punjabi village-life resort, is on the same road and works well as a stop on the way back. Ask about it when you book so we can time the evening around it.

Frequently asked questions
What time is the Wagah Border ceremony?
The Beating Retreat ceremony is held every evening at sunset — around 4:15 pm in winter (November to February) and around 5:15 pm in summer (March to October). The exact time shifts week by week as the days change length, so confirm it for your date before you go.
What time should we leave Amritsar for the Wagah Border?
Leave the city by about 2:30 pm in winter and 3:30 pm in summer. That allows 45 minutes of driving, the walk from the parking area to the stands, and the security check, and still gets you a seat with a view.
Is there an entry fee for the Wagah Border ceremony?
No, entry is free. You pass through a security check and need photo identification with you, and foreign visitors are guided to a separate seating area.
How long does the Wagah Border trip take?
Plan on five to six hours from your hotel and back: 45 minutes each way, about an hour to reach your seat through security, and 45 minutes to an hour of ceremony.
Can we visit Wagah Border on the same day as the Golden Temple?
Yes, and most visitors do. See the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum in the morning and early afternoon, then leave for the border at 2:30 or 3:30 pm.
