Three days is the right amount of time for the Kangra valley from Amritsar. The drive out takes four and a half to five hours, so day one is the road — up through Pathankot and into the hills, reaching Dharamshala by afternoon with the evening free in McLeodganj. Day two stays up in the mountains: the Tsuglagkhang complex where the Dalai Lama lives, the Tibetan quarter around it, Bhagsunag waterfall and the Bhagsu village lanes, the Norbulingka Institute for Tibetan crafts, and the old St John in the Wilderness church in the pine forest. Day three is for whatever you missed — a slow morning at Naddi viewpoint, or the trek up to Triund if you are fit — before the drive back to Amritsar. The Dhauladhar range is in front of you the whole time, and the light in the early morning is the reason photographers come.
